Angelina, breast cancer and how to lower your risk

You’ve no doubt heard the news that Angelina Jolie underwent a preventative double mastectomy to greatly reduce her risk of developing breast cancer. Every year thousands of women face decisions like Angelina’s. But what if fewer women had to?

Decades of scientific evidence point to modern living as a major culprit. In our daily lives we are exposed to toxic chemicals in our food and radiation from a wide range of sources, including cleaning and personal-care products, plastics, food, air, water, medical treatments, our workplaces and our neighborhoods. So how do you lower your risk? Here are some tips;

Avoid drinking out of plastic bottles.

Eat a mainly plant-based diet. I recommend that every woman try to fill at least two-thirds of your plate with plant foods—colorful vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and beans—and no more than one-third with animal protein.

Only eat organic protein

Add fiber: Fiber is essential, flax seeds chia seeds and berries, cruciferous vegetables, may be particularly beneficial.

Drink 1-3 cups of green tea daily

Drink alcohol sparingly. Three to six drinks a week could increase your risk by 15 percent, two or more a day by 51 percent.

Eat folate rich foods, especially if you do drink, because low levels may leave you particularly vulnerable. Good sources are dried beans and peas, leafy greens, and fruits.

Avoid  charred grilled food/meat which can produce carcinogens. Marinate, precook, and grill at lower temperatures to keep it from charring. Cut your risk further by adding rosemary and cancer-fighting spices like turmeric and cumin.

Breast feed if you can. Protection is believed to come in part from a reduction in lifetime exposure to estrogen, a key factor in the growth of breast cancer tumors.

Avoid synthetic hormone replacement therapies. 

Eat red/purple organic grapes which contain resveratrol, which may block the development of breast cancer. Resveratrol is concentrated in the skin of the fruit, so juice doesn’t pack as much punch, and green varieties contain significantly less.

Eat flackers or use FLAXSEEDS in or on your food. Flaxseeds contain plant lignans, antioxidants that may have an anticancer effect. Add a tablespoon to cereal or yogurt, or sprinkle over a salad.

Snack on walnuts, s few day may reduce risk.

Check vitamin D level because a deficiency has been associated with breast cancer risk. A typical supplemental daily dose is 600 to 2,000 IUs.

Take OMEGA-3S. They may help fend off cancer, but make sure the supplements are from mercury-free fish; take 1,000 to 2,000 mg. each day.

A little yoke can go along way…..

eggs berries beans greensI was just in Anaheim for Expo West and it was basically a large sampling food fest. Sadly, even though it is the ‘natural product expo’ many of the food choices were seriously unhealthy, or for me, involved dark chocolate, so I needed to balance things out and I needed it to be easy since we were at a trade show working 12 hours a day. This is why I turned to ol faithful, organic humane eggs.

Eggs are fantastic for your health, filling, complete with protein and contain a wide variety of important vitamin and nutrients. For many years we have been led to believe that eggs are not healthy; that they are fattening, that they can cause heart disease, that they contain bad fats. Misled by diet fads and incorrect nutritional information, we were taught to believe that the protein part of the egg is the best part of the egg, so weight conscious consumers and dieters have switched to eating only the whites of the eggs and a new market opened up selling boxes of the whites only. Restaurants have become accustomed to it too, now on menus you can find ‘egg white omelets’ as well. But in the egg, I mean in the end, nature is way smarter than we are and that’s why I say the ‘yokes on us!’

Egg yokes contain:

1. a good source of choline. One egg yolk has about 300 micrograms of choline. Choline is an important nutrient that helps regulate the brain, nervous system, and cardiovascular system. Women should take in about 420 micrograms daily for optimal health, men around 500 mcg.

2. They contain the right kind of fat. One egg has just 5 grams of fat and only 1.5 grams of saturated fat. According to a study by the Harvard School of Public Health, there is no significant link between egg consumption and heart disease. In fact, according to one study, regular consumption of eggs may help prevent blood clots, strokes and heart attacks.

3. New research shows that, contrary to previous belief, moderate consumption of eggs does not have a negative impact on cholesterol. In fact, recent studies have shown that regular consumption of two eggs per day does not affect a person’s lipid profile and may, in fact, improve it.

4.Eggs are one of the only foods that contain naturally occurring vitamin D.

5.Eggs promote healthy hair and nails because of their high sulphur content and wide array of vitamins and minerals. Many people find their hair growing faster after adding eggs to their diet, especially if they were previously deficient in foods containing sulphur or B12.

6.Researchers found that people who eat eggs every day lower their risk of developing cataracts, due to the carotenoid content of lutein and also because of the zeaxanthin in eggs.

And finally, one egg contains 6 grams of high-quality protein and all 9 essential amino acids, which mean that it is a great source of protein! So I cured my chocolate imbalance with a few greens mixed into my fabulous eggs and I felt great!

So next time you need a quick snack or meal make an omelet, add some veggies and avoid an all whiter…a little yoke can go along way…..

Flu Prevention & Healing Remedies

I just spent two weeks straight seeing sick people at the Urgent Care and I have to say that it is officially cold and flu season here in Minnesota. There are so many good ways to boost your immune system; get your daily dose of vitamin d, get good restful sleep, eat a lot of nutrient dense green leafies and plenty of citrus fruit to get your vitamin C levels up. Also, during this flu season I like to add fresh garlic to things. Garlic is a wonderful anti-bacterial and antiseptic plus it tastes fabulous.

For a sore throat and overall immune boosting activity try the following brew…it works!

Cut up 2 organic lemons, drop them in a small mason jar. Finely grind 1/2 – 1 fresh ginger root. Add 1 tsp. cinnamon or pumpkin spice. Add 1/8 tsp cayenne or if this is too much heat for you can do 1/4 tsp black pepper

Pour in some of your favorite raw local honey or organic manuka healing honey and sweeten to your likeness.

Stir well. Store in the fridge.

Take 1 teaspoon 3-4 times a day (or more if desired). Can be added to a cup of cold or warm water or tea.

If you want to be even more aggressive one or even two fresh cloves of Garlic can be your best friend. You can eat raw if you dare, chop up and place in a tsp of honey or add extra to your humus or guac, and I mean extra. Garlic is a natural anti-bacterial agent and works great to keep you cold and flu free.

I also make sure that I keep elderberry syrup in my house at all times. I usually take the above with one tsp of Sambucol. It is a fabulous anti-viral aid and it tastes wonderful too.
